We met Bea & Peter at a Hanukkah party when they were in Seattle, halfway through their bike trip.
John asked, “So you are riding across the country?” “Nein,” Peter said. “We are riding around zee Welt. Zurich to Zurich over four and a half years.” Bea beamed her luminescent smile, and I, Sabrina, was overcome with determination! We were suddenly off and running with our own idea to ride across Italy and France for our honeymoon the following summer. It was spectacular and glorious, but of course that trip wasn’t enough: now thirteen years later, we have four young children…. Marino, Octavia, Corinne Nicolina, and Emily Ireland…..and we want to give them the world, on bicycle. We are certified teachers, so we can take them with us and ‘home school’ them on the road, interacting with the world in ways that exceed anything they could learn in a classroom; can you imagine how extraordinary it could be?! Connections to people around the world, learning in context, planning and investigating, circumnavigating our precious planet as a family team. We can think of no better way to teach about world peace or to highlight the beauty of the human race and the wonders of our shared home.
We plan to leave within four years, but we have no money for this trip*, and are struggling currently to pay off debt and mortgage and get our children to summer camp, as well as to launch Sabrina’s realistic fiction book….an adventure story about empowering children to change the world through community service and veg(an)etarian activism. It is all towards these most magnificent causes: fulfilling the dream of world peace….by teaching our children to live in the highest light through challenges overcome and by learning, growing, and giving, to preserve and celebrate our glorious Earth. All on bikes, together!
We will live simply on the road; camping and cooking using local ingredients; we hope that by contributing to the economies of the communities we ride through, this will support a vast connected circle of people.
We will be able to pursue this dream with your extraordinary help; in the memory of our parents, Lee & Patricia, Mario & Luciana, and through the folk songs they taught us and inspired all those years. We will carry that inspiration around the world, in our paniers and in our hearts.
